Dr. Charlotte Denman Lozier Bursary for Single Mothers
A project of Go Life: U of A Campus Pro-Life
Biography
Dr. Charlotte Denman Lozier (1844-1870) proved women can make valuable contributions to society, fighting the prevalent idea that women were incompetent. She earned a degree at New York City Medical College for Women, and was particularly noted for her defense and support of single mothers and their children. She served as first vice president of the National Working Women’s Association, an organization that sought improved labor conditions for women of all socioeconomic classes. After marrying she had several children, while teaching and maintaining an active maternal/child health practice.
